SunRise Academy is dedicated to the education and remediation of students with learning and emotional disabilities, including dyslexia and attention deficit disorders. The academy serves boys between the ages of 7 and 22, exposing them to a nurturing and culturally enriched curriculum and environment emphasizing the traditional and historical achievements of Africans and African Americans. SunRise believes in the importance of parental involvement in the development of young people and therefore welcomes and requires parents to participate in their son’s educational and social development.

The Academy accepts students from a variety of backgrounds. Most have experienced feelings of failure and frustration in school, and many cannot appreciate their own level of intelligence. Through the Academy’s flexible, multi-level, multi-faceted, and multi-sensory program, each student is assessed and past academic performance studied carefully prior to prescribing the individual educational treatment plan that will complement and enhance the student’s growth. The well-planned and structured environment offers each student the opportunity to advance to his own ability level and allows the staff to assist each student in the development of self-confidence, awareness of their uniqueness as individuals, and their importance to the group.

The Academy’s philosophy can be summarized in three words: Structure, Consistency, and Communication.
